Marzia Poerio, TWO VIEWS ON FREEDOM

Are the following two views not relevant to all of us? (They came to mind when reading the news on Myanmar peaceful marches in favour of democracy led by monks and met with violent reactions from the security forces).

"It will be hard to find a parallel in history in which unarmed people have represented the urge for freedom, turning the very armlessness into the central means for deliverance".

(EPIGRAMS FROM GANDHIJI, T-5-193, http://www.mkgandhi.org/epigrams/)

"It is the love of ordinary people, in Burma, in Japan or anywhere else in the world, for justice and peace and freedom that is our surest defense against the forces of unreason and extremism that turn innocent songs into threatening chants of war".

(Aung San Suu Kyi, LETTERS FROM BURMA, No 23,
