ELEGY FOR AN UNTAKEN SWIM, JUNE 1982
Swimming in Sicily is easy.
You just take a deep breath
and dive from a mountain.
More often than not the water is clear.
Homicides are dumped from the headland.
It would take dynamite to discover them in coral.
More often than not the water is clear.
Even in Lake Pergusa the water is made to carry blood
to Proserpine panting on the car-racing track.
When it is not clear take a running plunge
into the puce seaweed and tangled squids.
You will come up cured with iodine.
It is easiest in sweet-smelling grottoes
where the moss clings to the tufa rock
and the swimmer can stroke the moss as he slips in.
Easy too off lava shores if you avoid prickly pears.
You can crush the sediment in your palm
and throw it out to sea.
Nights when the sirocco blows
it is safe to swim in the sastrugi sea
if you are the moon. Fishermen know this.

ELEGIA PER UNA NUOTATA MANCATA DEL GIUGNO 1982
È facile nuotare in Sicilia.
Basta inspirare
e tuffarsi da una cima.
L’acqua è spesso trasparente.
Dai promontori si gettano assassini:
li troverà la dinamite tra i coralli.
L’acqua è spesso trasparente.
È adatta a convogliare sangue anche nel lago di Pergusa
verso Proserpina ansimante sul circuito automobilistico.
Quando non ha trasparenze, correrai a tuffarti
dentro le alghe color pulce e i calamari ingarbugliati.
Per risalire guarito dallo iodio.
Quanto ciò è più agevole nelle grotte dal profumo dolce
dove il muschio si abbarbica alle concrezioni di tufo
e il nuotatore intrufolandosi carezza muschio.
È altrettanto agevole immergersi dalle spiagge di lava,
basta evitare quelle pere spinose. I sedimenti,
li schiacci dentro il palmo, poi li butti in mare.
A volte nottetempo soffia soffia lo scirocco e se sei la luna
saprai tuffarti con sicurezza nel mare increspato.
Come sanno i pescatori.
